Description
What is Organic Barleygrass Powder?
Barleygrass is the young leaf of the barley plant, Hordeum vulgare, harvested as a green shoot well before the grain forms. The blades are dried and milled to a fine green powder — 100% barleygrass, nothing else. Grown in Austria.
If you have tried wheatgrass, this is its gentler relative. The flavour is still green and grassy but noticeably milder and sweeter, with a rounded, earthy finish rather than a sharp one. That makes it the easier of the two to drink on its own.
Why you’ll love it
Barleygrass is the one to reach for if wheatgrass has ever been too much. The same vivid green, the same simplicity — a single milled ingredient — but a softer flavour that needs less masking.
It also holds its colour beautifully, which makes it useful whenever you want a natural green in food without a synthetic colouring.
How to use Barleygrass Powder
Mix 1 tsp into water, juice or a smoothie once daily. Shake or blend well. Start small and build up.
It pairs well with apple, pear, cucumber, mint, lime and banana. Beyond drinks, it works stirred through yoghurt or overnight oats, whisked into a salad dressing, or used to tint and flavour raw energy balls and no-bake slices. Add it off the heat, as heat dulls both the colour and the flavour.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does barleygrass powder taste like?
Green and grassy but milder and sweeter than wheatgrass, with an earthy finish. Most people find it the easier of the two to take in plain water.
What is the difference between barleygrass and wheatgrass?
They are the young leaves of two different cereal plants. Barleygrass is generally the milder and slightly sweeter of the two; wheatgrass has a sharper, more savoury green flavour. Barleygrass is also markedly higher in protein and lower in sugars.
How much should I use?
One teaspoon a day, mixed into water, juice or a smoothie. Start small and build up.
Does barleygrass contain gluten?
Barleygrass is the young leaf of the barley plant, cut before the grain develops. We declare barley as an allergen on the label and make no gluten-free claim, so this is not suitable if you are avoiding gluten.
Is this the same as barley grass juice powder?
No. This is the whole dried leaf, milled, so it keeps the fibre of the plant. Juice powder is made by pressing the grass and dehydrating the juice, which removes the fibre.
Is it vegan?
Yes, suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
