Description

What is Organic Rosehip Powder?

Rosehips are the fruit of the wild rose — the small scarlet hips left on the bush once the flowers have gone over. Ours are wild-harvested in Lesotho from Rosa canina and Rosa rubiginosa, then cleaned, dried and milled from the shells and pulp into a fine powder. Nothing is added.

The colour runs from reddish-brown to a vibrant golden-orange. The flavour is genuinely fruity rather than herbal: sweet-sour and bright, closer to hibiscus or dried apple than to a green powder.

Why you’ll love it

Rosehips have been gathered across Europe and southern Africa for centuries. In Britain they became a wartime staple when citrus disappeared from the shops; in Scandinavia they are still made into nyponsoppa, a sweet rosehip soup. This powder brings that flavour into everyday use without the labour of preparing the fresh fruit.

It is also one of the more useful powders to keep in the kitchen precisely because it is tart. Where most superfood powders are earthy and need masking, this one brightens whatever it is added to.

Wild-harvested, not farmed. These hips grow wild rather than on a plantation, which is unusual for a powder at this price.

How to use Rosehip Powder

Stir 1 tsp into smoothies, juice, yoghurt or porridge daily. Best taken cold.

Its tartness makes it versatile in cooking: fold it into cake batters and buttercreams for a fruity note and a warm orange colour, stir it into compotes and jams, or make a simple warm infusion with hot water and honey. It works particularly well with apple, hibiscus, orange and ginger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does rosehip powder taste like?

Sweet-sour and fruity, with a bright, tangy character — closer to hibiscus or dried apple than to a herbal powder. It brightens rather than muddies whatever you add it to.

What are rosehips?

They are the fruit of the rose, left on the bush after the flowers fade. This powder is milled from the dried shells and pulp of wild-harvested Rosa canina and Rosa rubiginosa hips.

Where does it come from?

Lesotho, where the hips are wild-harvested rather than cultivated.

Does it contain the seeds or the irritant hairs?

No. The powder is milled from the dried shells and pulp of the hip.

How much rosehip powder should I use?

A typical serving is around 1 teaspoon, stirred into a drink or food. Adjust to taste, as the tartness is quite pronounced.

Can I use it in baking?

Yes. Its fruity tartness works well in cakes, buttercreams, compotes and jams, and it lends a natural warm orange colour.

Can I make rosehip tea with it?

Yes — whisk a teaspoon into hot water and let it stand for a few minutes. It is good with honey and a slice of orange.

Is it vegan?

Yes, suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
