What Are Organic Blanched Almonds?
Almonds grow in a shell that leaves a residue and skin on the outside of the meat. When the skin is removed, in a process called blanching, the result is a skinless, white almond, with less bitter qualities, known for their sweetness or more specifically their especially distinct "Marzipan" flavour.
It should come as no surprise, Given their creamy taste, that Blanched Almonds are especially suitable for making baked goods and confectionery but they are certainly not constrained to such uses...the reality being that there is a shorter list of foods that aren't complimented by Them!
As such Blanched Almonds are just one of many varieties available, with other popular preparations being Ground/Flour, Flaked and Whole, but It certainly doesn't stop there as you can get Almond Butters, Almond Pastes and my favourite - Almond Milk which is a delicious beverage, being a more nutritious and Dairy Free alternative to cow's milk!
Why Should I Get Organic Blanched Almonds?
Blanched almonds make a lovely garnish for platters and sweets. If you are baking a cake, cookie or pastry in which an even a moderately light colour is desirable, you'll want to use blanched almonds. Stir-fries and pilafs often call for blanched almonds because the skin may separate from the nut as the dish cooks, leaving husk residues in your recipe.
If you want my two cents I find Unblanched almonds are better for snacking as the skin makes almonds more bitter and grittier. Still though, Blanched or Not, almonds are still a rich source of fatty acids and the fatty acids still help to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), and promote healthy skin and hair. Reducing cholesterol only accounts for half of the almonds nutritional arsenal as they are a fantastic source of many vitamins and minerals, such as manganese, copper and Riboflavin which support energy production and metabolic rate.
To finish Almonds also contain two vital brain nutrients, riboflavin and L-carnitine which are often difficult to get from other dietary sources. The consumption of almonds is a highly recommended way of increasing your intake of these brain Nutrients.
