What Are Organic Pitted Whole Apricots?
So something you may notice immediately is that Organic Apricots (no matter who they are from) are one of the Organic food items that look entirely different to their conventional counterpart. Generally Apricots are a bright and luminous shade of orange, yet any Organic apricots you come across are anything from a deep brown to dark purple, even almost verging on blackness...more often than not they bear more of a resemblance to prunes than your common Apricot.
This observation (however counter-intuitive it may seem) is truly a testament to their quality and purity as its Preservatives we have to "Thank" for this effect. Without intervention Apricots and more specifically compounds called carotenoids (that create this vibrant hue of orange) will Oxidize. When these compounds Oxidize they are essentially breaking down and the colour they once created, changes - it is this Oxidation that preservatives like Sulphur Dioxide prevent...As you can see its all needless in the first place!
Our Preservative free Apricots actually taste considerably BETTER than treated apricots, why you ask?
Because sulphur is a rather horrible product and though it has its many essential applications, its purpose on apricots is superficial and just introduces the rather unpleasant aroma of Sulphur (Rotten eggs for all of you who are lucky enough not to know), So given the choice, I'll take my Apricots Sulphur Free and Just the way nature intended.
Why Should I Get Organic Pitted Whole Apricots?
Colour aside Apricots make for an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C and dietary fibre, and given that the Vitamin A in Apricots is fat soluble, the fruit dissolves in the body easily and the important nutrients are effortlessly absorbed. Also a darn good source of dietary fibre, potassium and the powerful antioxidant carotenoid - lycopene.
Apricots are also particularly useful for your blood. Any plant produce that contains iron has a secondary type "non-heme iron". This type of iron takes its time to be absorbed by the body, and the longer it stays in the system, the better your chances in preventing anaemia.
All in all we find our Apricots to be super soft and full of flavour, if you like to mix them with things such as muesli (Which they go great with by the way!). You will find them softer, infinitely more moist and with a better flavour than pre-diced Apricots which are tougher and retain less flavour.
