What Is Demerara Sugar?
Demerara sugar is a type of cane sugar that has large crystals and golden-toffee colour. Originating from the British colony of Demerara, now Guyana in South America, the Demerara sugar gets its name from the region of its origin. This sugar was originally extracted from the sugarcanes grown in the soil of the volcanic region. Today, most of the demerara sugar comes from Mauritius, Malawi as well as Jamaica.
