The cayenne pepper derives from the ‘nightshade’ pepper family and produces a relatively spicy flavour. Originating in South America, these peppers are said to have been discovered by the explorer Christopher Columbus, where he brought them over to Europe in the 15th century. Capsaicin- an active compound found in cayenne peppers, has been said to help relieve pain.
